Welcome to First Presbyterian Church of Gloucester, Virginia!

Presbyterians trace their origins back to the Reformation of the 1500's in Europe. We are called Presbyterians because of our form of church government. John Knox, having studied the teachings of John Calvin, wrote "The First Book of Discipline" in which the concepts of the presbyteries, synods, and the General Assembly were outlined.

Our congregation came into being as a result of an April, 1880 meeting of the East Hanover Presbytery in Richmond. On Sunday, November 14, 1880, two members of the Presbytery of East Hanover came to Gloucester County and organized a Presbyterian Church. This new church consisted of 21 communicants and 28 baptized non-communicants. Originally called Court House Presbyterian Church, it was officially organized as the Gloucester Presbyterian Church.

Our Beliefs:

The Doctrine of God
We believe in one God who reveals Himself as creator, redeemer and sustainer of all creation. God's goal in history is to bring all of His creation into wholeness with Him. We speak of God in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We believe that Jesus was the Word of God made flesh, both fully God and fully human. God's saving work for us was accomplished through the birth, life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ.

We believe that God is present with us each day as the Holy Spirit. As such, God strengthens, comforts and guides us in every aspect of our lives.

The Holy Scriptures
We believe that the Bible is our only infallible rule of faith and life. It is the inspired Word of God and the unique and authoritative witness of Jesus Christ.

The Sacraments
We affirm the existence of two sacraments, Holy Baptism and the Lord's S
upper (Communion).

Justification by Faith
We can do nothing to save ourselves from the power of sin and death. Only by accepting the atonement of Christ and serving Him as our risen Lord are we saved.
